Hot Ideas for a Cool Summer Soiree!

Summertime is here and the weather is getting hot!  I’m always looking for some cool fun ways to cool guests down while adding a cool element of surprise.  This week we take a look at ways to cool down while heating your party atmosphere up!

Ice It Up!

A simple and easy thing to do is to infuse ice cubes with fruit that match the drinks and cocktails you are making.  You can easily do this with a little bit of preplanning and add an interesting conversation piece.

Get an ice cube tray and fill with water or fruit juice.  In each section drop one piece of fruit.  Think blueberries, raspberries, mint, a slice of strawberry, a bit of watermelon, peach, nectarine or whatever tickles your fancy.  You can even use flowers or veggies like basil, cucumber or even jalapeno for a spicy drink.  Drop the fruit in and stick the tray in the freezer and Voila’!  You have a beautiful drink garnish that spices up your drink and adds an interesting conversation piece.

To create an ice ring for the punchbowl, use the same concept except freeze it in your bundt cake pan.  My grandmother used to do this when I was small, and I still think it makes for a beautiful addition to a punchbowl.  Some ideas are just timeless.

Cool The Soup!

Chilled soups are another way to beat the summer heat.  Try out this recipe for Watermelon Gazpacho by Tyler Florence.  It’s delicious!

Ingredients

• 1 large tomato, pureed
• 1/2 serrano chile
• 2 cups cubed fresh watermelon
• 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
• 2 tablespoons minced red onion
• 1/2 cucumber, seeded and minced
• 2 tablespoons minced fresh dill, plus more for garnish
• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

 

Directions

In a blender, puree the tomatoes, chile, and 1/2 of the watermelon. Pour in the red wine vinegar and olive oil and pulse. Add the onion, cucumber and dill and season with salt and pepper. Puree until smooth. Pour into chilled bowls and sprinkle with dill, feta, and remaining watermelon. Serve.
